Mama Mias becomes your best friend once you’ve been introduced. That’s why it’s filled, even on a weeknight, with delighted diners there for as straight forward a meal as a gourmet brick-oven pizza prepared in front of your eyes with fresh ingredients to a hearty Italian lunch or dinner, appetizer, salad, soup, entrée and dessert by Dolce and Biscotti.

On March 8, mimosas are more than a celebratory drink. They’re a feathery yellow flower, the symbol for International Women’s Day. So when Lauren Grisio, co-owner of Mama Mia’s Pizza and Cafe, started to plan a friend’s bridal shower, Grisio ordered mimosas from Holland, one for each guest.

The owners of Mama Mia ́s Pizza and Cafe on Ballston Avenue were in luck when their next - door neighbor moved out earlier this summer. Giuseppe and Lauren Grisio are looking to pair their 7 - year - old pizzeria, located in the Price Chopper plaza, with a tradit ional Italian cafe and pastry shop now that the Dream Sleep Mattress Outlet has moved to Washington Avenue and left a vacancy. The cafe will feature Italian coffees and espresso, homemade Italian pastries and bread, plus gelato, beer and wine, at both bar and table seating. A lounge in the back could seat 70 for birthday parties, bridal showers, sports team banquets and the like. "We were turning away a lot of parties," due to lack of space at the restaurant, said Lauren Grisio.

Mama Mia’s is located in Saratoga, but their cuisine is one hundred percent authentic Italian. I obviously eat in many superb restaurants and to say that I was impressed with Mama Mia’s is an understatement. The cuisine is truly comparable to that of the most high-end Italian restaurants in our area... minus the high-end prices. Mama Mia’s has an immaculate and comfortable interior. With distressed walls, tile floor, red table cloths and green seating, the atmosphere is family friendly and inviting. Clay pots and Italian pictures add to the authenticity of the dining experience.

Mama Mias in Saratoga Living

With dozens of great restaurants located on or near Broadway in Saratoga Springs, who would think to discover one in the Price Chopper plaza on Ballston Avenue? Perhaps you’ve spotted the place, wedged between a mattress store and Quarters, a neighborhood bar; its simple electric signs announcing “Pizza” and “Café” in red letters are that visible from the road. Perhaps you’ve seen the other sign, “Mama Mia’s,” and thought it must be one in a chain of pizza parlors, the likes of which can be found in any shopping plaza in the region. As you approach the restaurant, the first tip-off that this might not be one of those all-too familiar pizzerias is the six- foot-tall plaster statue of a chef standing outside the front door holding a sign that reads “Open.” Except for his size, he’s nothing special either, as this portly puffy-cheeked chef-figure has become ubiquitous as a restaurant-decorating motif. But then you spy “Giuseppe” printed neatly on his hatband. That’s the name of the owner, Giuseppe Grisio, from Bari, Italy. And a picture of his 78-year-old mother Giovanna, who lives in Italy, is depicted on the restaurant window.

At Mama Mia's, Saratoga Springs' newest Italian restaurant, Co-Owner Giuseppe Grisio puts his personal stamp on all aspects of the restaurant. From baking the pizzas to supervising the servers and checking on the customers, he brings old world flair to this family style eatery. Spending his early life between Bari and Venice Italy, Grisio has now arrived in Saratoga Springs to bring his own brand ofltalian cuisine to the town as a whole, not just the tourists. Located at 185 Ballston Avenue in the Price Chopper Plaza, Mama Mia's seats 85 comfortably as well as offering a complete take-out menu. The decor features checkered cloths on the tables, soft Italian music and wall sculptures among the many plants. The ceiling fans waft the aromas of baking pizza throughout the restaurant, luring many patrons straight to that section of the menu. Patrons have a clear view of the immense brick oven where the restaurant's signature dish, thin crust brick oven pizza, is prepared. All dough is made fresh daily on the premises as are many of the other menu offerings.
